Operational Movement Strategies of Volunteer Search and Rescue Teams: February 6, 2023 Kahramanmaras Earthquakes Experience

Özet
Disasters are sudden and devastating events that require effective search and rescue (SAR) activities to reduce loss of life and property. This study examines the factors influencing volunteer SAR teams’ decisions to stay, relocate, or withdraw from operational areas during the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes. Using a phenomenological design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 team leaders from seven NGOs, and the data were thematically analyzed. Findings indicate that these decisions are shaped not only by operational needs but also by psychological factors, organizational structure, team dynamics, and environmental threats. The study contributes to understanding volunteer decision-making, strengthening coordination, and enhancing professionalization in disaster volunteerism. © (2025), (Afet ve Acil Durum Yonetimi Baskanligi (AFAD)).
