Özet

Problem soils, including saline, drought, acidic, alkaline, nutrient-deficient, etc., are the most critical factors affecting the productivity of food crops. These soils limit nutrient availability and induce stress, reducing crop growth and development, leading to yield losses. It is estimated that 75% of the world’s soil has one or more problems that severely affect global food security. However, a ray of hope is emerging, as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) that form a symbiotic alliance with plant roots facilitate the uptake of nutrients, especially phosphorus. Also, the AMF can reduce the effects of unfavorable conditions by enhancing water uptake. The AMF can increase crop yield and resilience through extensive hyphal networks that promote nutrient and water uptake, especially in stress-prone environments. In addition, AMF inoculation can reduce both biotic and abiotic stresses to raise crop productivity in such an area, warranting safe food production. Applying AMF as a biological amendment in agricultural practices could provide a sustainable solution to the challenges posed by problematic soils, ensuring food security and environmental health. © 2026 Elsevier Inc.
