EFFECTS OF ELEVATED ATMOSPHERIC CO2 CONCENTRATIONS ON THE GREEN PEACH APHID, MYZUS PERSICAE (SULZER,1776) (HEMIPTERA: APHIDAE) AT TWO DIFFERENT AIR TEMPERATURES

Elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration enhances plant growth, but may also increase the damage caused by some phytophagous insects. This study was carried out to determine the effects of CO2 levels on the biological parameters ofMyzus persicae (Sulzer, 1776) (Hemiptera: Aphidae) in greenhouses in 2020-2021. Trials with 0-24 (hour) old individuals of M. persicae were set up on eggplants grown with four different (400, 600, 800 and 1000 ppm) CO2 levels and two different (29/19-32/22 degrees C) temperatures. The intrinsic rate of increase (r) was lowest (0.2953 day(-1)) at 32/22 degrees C and 800 ppm CO2. It was determined that the lowest finite rate of increase (lambda) was 1.34355 day(-1) at 32/22 degrees C temperature at 800 ppm of CO2. Net reproductive rate (R-0) was lower at all CO2 levels at 32/22 degrees C compared to CO2 levels at 29/19 degrees C. Longest oviposition period was determined as 18.38 days in the greenhouse at 29/19 degrees C with 400 ppm of CO2. The increase in temperature and CO2 level showed that there could be a significant reduction in net reproductive rate and the number of offspring of green peach aphid. These findings highlight the importance of considering the effects of climate change on the population dynamics of pest species.
