Öğe Does corruption increase antidumping investigations?(Econjournals ijeep@econjournals.com, 2016) Avşar, Veysel; Habiyaremye, Alexis; Unal, UmutThis paper represents the first attempt to examine the influence that corruption exerts on the worldwide use of antidumping (AD) claims as a means to seek trade protection. Since the inception of the World Trade Organization and the concomitant dramatic fall in tariffs, AD duties have become one of the few permissible measures to provide temporary protection to foreign competition. Increased lobbying pressure in this area has gone hand in hand with the explosion of number of AD filings. We hypothesized that corruption gives the import competing sector the opportunity to more effectively lobby for trade protection and this can be expected to result in more attempts to use AD filings. Using cross-country data on AD investigations, we provide support to this hypothesis. © 2016 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Öğe Rethinking the effects of fiscal policy on macroeconomic aggregates: A disaggregated SVAR analysis(Institute foe Economic Forecasting edexpert@zappmobile.ro, 2015) Unal, UmutThis paper characterizes the dynamic effects of net tax and government spending shocks on several macroeconomic aggregates in four OECD countries using a structural VAR approach. For the first time in the literature, I propose a structural decomposition of total net taxes into four components: corporate income taxes, income taxes, indirect taxes and social insurance taxes. The paper provides estimates of the responses of macroeconomic aggregates to innovations in these net tax components. Decompositions of total net tax innovations show that net tax components have different impacts on economic variables depending upon the strength of wealth, substitution, and income effects reflecting the structure of the economies. © 2015 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Öğe RETHINKING THE EFFECTS OF FISCAL POLICY ON MACROECONOMIC AGGREGATES: A DISAGGREGATED SVAR ANALYSIS(Inst Economic Forecasting, 2015) Unal, UmutThis paper characterizes the dynamic effects of net tax and government spending shocks on several macroeconomic aggregates in four OECD countries using a structural VAR approach. First, we show that participating in the World Cup significantly increases exports from the participant countries to the host countries, relative to a control group of non-participants. Second, we demonstrate that trade is reasonably higher for host-participant pairs compared to other country pairs. We also provide dynamic estimates for both cases and offer plausible arguments and important channels for our findings.
