Öğe Annular atrophic lichen planus: a rare clinical entity(Wiley, 2017) Tamer, Funda; Orenay, Ozge Mine; Sarifakioglu, Evren; Bayrak, Reyhan[Abstract Not Available]Öğe Der anuläre atrophische Lichen ruber planus: eine seltene klinische Entität(NLM (Medline), 2017) Tamer, Funda; Örenay, Özge Mine; Sarifakioğlu, Evren; Bayrak, Reyhan[No abstract available]Öğe Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-Negative and Human Herpes Virus-8 (HHV-8)-Positive Primary Effusion Lymphoma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature(Galenos Yayincilik, 2013) Karatas, Sonay Guven; Bayrak, Reyhan; Balcik, Ozlem Sahin; Yalcin, Kadir Serkan; Atici, Esra; Akyildiz, Umit; Kosar, AliPrimary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that presents with serosal effusion in body cavities, without obvious tumor masses. Although PEL occurs in immunocompromised patients that are human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive, it also occurs in immunocompetent human herpes virus-8 (HHV-8)-positive patients. Herein we present an immunocompetent, HIV-negative, CD-20-negative, HHV-8-positive patient with pleural effusion that was diagnosed as PEL. The CHOP protocol and talc pleurodesis were administered. HHV-8 plays a causative role in PEL and is important for differentiating PEL from other types of lymphoma. As such, in addition to pleurodesis antiviral treatment should be considered for optimal treatment outcome.Öğe Loss of heterozygosity in ING3 and ING5 genes in breast cancer(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2014) Gunduz, Esra; Nas, Gokhan; Acar, Muradiye; Uctepe, Eyyup; Bozer, Mikdat; Oznur, Murat; Bayrak, ReyhanThe tumor suppressor genes (TSGs) ING3 and ING5, members of the inhibitor of growth gene family, are effective in inhibition of cell growth and induction of apoptosis. However, in many cancer types, one of the alleles of a TSG is lost through carcinogenesis, while the remaining allele is usually inactivated through a process called loss of heterozygosity (LOH). Previous studies in head and neck cancer revealed that allelic loss and reduced expression is a common pattern of ING gene family members. Fifty paraffin-embedded breast cancer tissues were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction and denatured-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for LOH status. The allelic deletion frequency of ING3 and ING5 were detected as 14% and 17% in breast cancer patients, respectively. No significant relationship was detected between ING3 LOH status and clinicopathological variables. Our data also suggest that both ING3 and ING5 LOH statuses have no significant effect in overall survival and disease-free survival of breast cancer patients. These results provide a rational explanation and relative contribution for the complexity of tumor formation, whereby allelic loss of ING3 and ING5 genes is not a major factor for breast cancer but is rather a part of a larger complex mechanism.Öğe Melatonin protects kidney against apoptosis induced by acute unilateral ureteral obstruction in rats(Polish Urological Assoc, 2016) Yildirim, Mehmet Erol; Badem, Huseyin; Cakmak, Muzaffer; Yilmaz, Hakki; Kosem, Bahadir; Karatas, Omer Faruk; Bayrak, ReyhanIntroduction To investigate whether there was a protective effect of melatonin on apoptotic mechanisms after an acute unilateral obstruction of the kidney. Material and methods A total of 25 rats consisting of five groups were used in the study, designated as follows: Group 1: control, Group 2: sham, Group 3: unilateral ureteral obstruction treated with only saline, Group 4: unilateral ureteral obstruction treated with melatonin immediately, and Group 5: unilateral obstruction treated with melatonin one day after obstruction. Melatonin was administered as a 10 mg/kg dose intraperitoneally. The kidneys were evaluated according to the apoptotic index and Ki-67 scores. Results Comparison of all obstruction groups (Group 3, 4, and 5), revealed that the apoptotic index was significantly higher in Groups 1 and 2. Despite melatonin reduced apoptotic mechanisms in Groups 4 and 5, there was no significant difference between Groups 4 and 5 in terms of the reduction of apoptosis. However, the reduction of apoptosis in the melatonin treated group did not decrease to the level of Groups 1 and 2. Conclusions Despite melatonin administration, which significantly reduces the apoptotic index occurring after acute unilateral ureteral obstruction, the present study did not observe a return to normal renal histology in the obstruction groups.Öğe Warthin like papillary carcinoma of the thyroid: A case report(Gazi Universitesi, 2015) Ceydilek, Bilge; Demirci, Hüseyin; Yavuz, Halise Çinar; Bayrak, ReyhanWarthin-like pappillary thyroid carcinoma is a rarely seen variant of thyroid papillary carcinoma. The name of the tumor originates from salivary gland's resemblance to Warthin tumor morphologically. A 39-year old female patient whose nodular goiter had been followed for 5 years applied to our clinic for the swelling on her neck. The fine-needle aspiration biopsy performed on the nodule identified in the patient's right lobe of thyroid revealed papillary thyroid carcinoma. The patient underwent bilateral total thyroidectomy. Tumor cells was monitored with clear nuclei, and nuclear pseudoinclusions. Intense lymphocytic cells in the middle of the papillary structures were identified. Notwithstanding that there is a limited number of knowledge about the prognosis of the warthin-like thyroid tumors, the literature, in general, shows that they have mostly good prognosis. © 2015 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
