Adolescents' perceptions of autonomy-supportive parents and social-emotional health: Serial multiple mediation of positive stress and mental toughness
(Sage Publications Ltd, 2024) Tunca, Asli
Adolescence may bring some developmental challenges that affect social-emotional health. However, it is also possible to turn challenges into opportunities. Parental autonomy support, psychological stress, and mental toughness can contribute to adolescents having a healthy period. This study examined the mediating role of positive stress and mental toughness in the relationship between parental autonomy support and social-emotional health. The study included 441 (female 56.46%, male 43.54%) adolescents in Turkey enrolled in a high school. Self-report scales were used in this cross-sectional study. The results showed that positive stress and mental toughness were serial mediators of the relationship between adolescents' perceptions of parental autonomy support and social-emotional health outcomes (indirect effect = 0.05 [0.03, 0.08]). These results extend the implications of self-determination and positive psychology theories. It guides parents, educators, and school counselors in strengthening adolescents' social-emotional health. Adolescents' socio-emotional health can be enhanced through workshops and counseling services that offer parental autonomy support, positive management of stress, and mental toughness.

An investigation of mother-in-law's role in the family system in Turkish culture: a phenomenological study
(Springer, 2024) Tunca, Asli; Durmus, Emine
In family studies, the literature on mother-in-law roles, which do not receive as much attention as the parent-child relationship but whose effects on the family system can be observed, is limited. Mother-in-law influence is one of the main reasons for divorce in Turkey. This study aimed to examine married women's perceptions of mother-in-law roles in family systems using a phenomenological research method. All participants were married women (n = 16) living in Turkey, with at least one child, and whose mother-in-law was alive. As a result of the interviews, three main themes were identified. Mothers-in-law were involved in their children's family system due to reasons such as economic conditions, children getting married at a young age, the daughter-in-law having to work outside the home, pregnancy and childbirth, and unfavorable relations between the origin of families and the spouses. In the system they were involved in, they sometimes assumed roles supporting the functioning of the system, but some other times causing destructive-inhibitive consequences. It was noteworthy that supportive mother-in-law roles were more common than destructive/inhibitive roles. It was realized that destructive/inhibitive mother-in-law roles may have negative effects on the family system, especially on children's mental health. All these results opened the door for supportive studies that will maximize the positive effects and minimize the negative effects on families, taking into account the conditions in which the mother-in-law is involved in the family system.

Fear of Happiness and Mindfulness as Mediators Between Fearful Attachment and Resilience
(Springernature, 2026) Tunca, Asli; Teke, Esra
Adverse childhood experiences can shape an individual's attachment patterns and influence lifelong psychological func-tioning. In this context, insecure attachment is considered a risk factor that hinders the development of resilience. Fearful attachment people exhibit more pronounced negative mental representations of themselves and others, leading to more fragile psychological processes associated with resilience. In this study, fear of happiness and mindfulness were considered as mediating variables that could help explain the underlying psychological processes in the relationship between fearful attachment and resilience. Attachment theory and resilience literature reveal that these variables are closely related to how individuals cope with stress and regulate emotional responses. The study included 427 adults (M = 30.50, SD = 12.99) living in T & uuml;rkiye. The study model was tested using structural equation modeling (SEM). Findings showed that fearful attachment negatively predicted resilience and mindfulness, while it positively predicted fear of happiness. Furthermore, fear of happiness and mindfulness were found to play a mediating role in the relationship between fearful attachment and resilience. The results indicate that the relationship between fearful attachment and resilience is not only direct but also a more complex structure operating through emotional and cognitive regulation processes. In interventions aimed at improving resilience, fear of happiness, and mindfulness can be considered as variables that can be taken into account both in the development of the theoretical framework and in the implementation processes

Grandmothers who raise working parents' children: Influences on grandchildren, behavior management styles, and educational needs
(Wiley, 2023) Durmus, Emine; Tunca, Asli
Objective The aim of the study was to examine perspectives on helping raise grandchildren among Turkish grandmothers who care for working parents' children. Background Grandparents helping raise their grandchildren has become increasingly common as a means to support women's employment. In Turkey, the Buyukanne Projesi (Grandma Project) was carried out in 2017 with the support of the government. This project encouraged grandmothers to help raise their grandchildren to encourage women's participation in the workforce. The importance of grandmothers in the family system and the role of raising grandchildren has gradually increased. Method This research is qualitative and phenomenological. Sixteen grandmothers living in Turkey participated in the research. Participants were selected by criterion sampling, a purposive sampling method. Results The study's findings were categorized into three main themes: the effects of being raised by grandmothers on grandchildren, grandmothers' behavior management styles, and grandmothers' educational needs. Conclusion While raising the children of working parents, grandmothers strive to instill societal and familial values to the children. In so doing, grandmothers appear to prefer democratic and child-centered behavior-management methods over authoritarian and oppressive ones. It was noted that grandmothers have some educational needs, especially with regard to child development issues. Implications Grandmothers' childrearing practices can be improved with training. Grandmothers can play an important role in raising children to increase women's participation in the workforce and to help support the family economically.

Parental Autonomy Support Prevent Digital Addiction by Reducing Adolescents' Negative Identity Perceptions? A Longitudinal Study
(Sage Publications Inc, 2026) Tunca, Asli
Digital technologies provide numerous opportunities for adolescents but also pose risks such as overuse and addiction. This study examined the long-term effects of parental autonomy support (promotion of independence and promotion of volitional functioning) on adolescents' digital addiction and negative identity perception. The study included 318 mid-adolescents (Mage = 16.68; 184 females, 134 males). The results showed that baseline promotion of independence and volitional functioning were negatively associated with digital addiction and negative identity perception at the 4-month follow-up. Furthermore, negative identity perception (T2) mediated the relationship between promotion of independence (T1) and promotion of volitional functioning (T1) with digital addiction (T2). These findings highlight the crucial role of parental autonomy support in reducing digital addiction and negative identity perception.

Strength-based parenting improves depression outcomes and promotes posttraumatic growth in earthquake survivors: a longitudinal study
(Springernature, 2025) Belen, Hacer; Tunca, Asli
Traumatic life experiences such as earthquakes are impactful on individuals' mental health and positive psychological characteristics are key assets for the preservation of mental health after stressful situations. Strength-based parenting and optimism are considered among those strengths to combat psychological problems including depression. The current study aimed to examine the longitudinal mediating effects of optimism between strength-based parenting and depression (model 1) and post-traumatic growth (model 2). Participants included 137 university students ranging in age between 18 and 53 (M = 21.83, SD = 5.41). Results demonstrated that strength-based parenting at baseline significantly and negatively correlated with depression while positive correlations were found with optimism and post-traumatic growth at a six-month follow-up. Moreover, optimism (T2) mediated the relationship between strength-based parenting (T1) and depression (T2) and post-traumatic growth (T2). Thus, this study identified the positive qualities and strengths to combat the adverse psychological effects of traumatic experiences including earthquakes, and deepened the current understanding of how strength-based parenting longitudinally contributes to individuals' positive psychological strengths, processes, and mental health after the disaster of the century.

The relationship of strength-based parenting with the negative effects of earthquake: mediating roles of optimism, resilience and mindfulness
(Springer, 2025) Tunca, Asli; Belen, Hacer
Earthquakes are natural disasters whose devastating effects are widely known and in early February 2023, 11 provinces in T & uuml;rkiye were deeply shaken. It was important to examine the protective factors against the negative effects of earthquakes to develop effective interventions and significant recovery. Hitherto, research in the literature focused more on the negative effects of the disaster and paid less attention to the conditions under which the forces that support well-being, such as optimism, resilience, and mindfulness. Thus, in the current study, we tested the relationship between Strength-based Parenting and depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms and the mediating role of optimism, resilience, and mindfulness in such a relationship. 408 university students who survived the devastating earthquake were included in the study. Participants filled out the Strength-Based Parenting Scale, Optimism and Pessimism Scale, Brief Resilience Scale, Mindfulness Scale, and Depression, Stress, Anxiety Scale (DASS-21). In the results, strength-based parenting was found to be positively correlated with optimism, resilience, and mindfulness while negative correlations were detected with depression, anxiety, and stress. Moreover, optimism, resilience, and mindfulness were found to mediate the relationship between strength-based Parenting and depression, anxiety, and stress. In this manner, the results showed that strength-based parenting has a protective role against the negative effects of the earthquake by contributing to optimism, resilience, and mindfulness. Thus, strength-based parenting appears promising in natural disaster studies.
