    A modelling study of renewable and stored energy sharing and pricing management system developed for multi-apartment complexes

    A unique system that will enable the efficient and shared usage of PV panels in multi-apartment complexes and sharing of energy is developed in this study along with a modeling scheme. Efficient and shared usage of the panels which is suggested as the solution requires sharing and pricing the energy in the apartment complex. In this modeling study which is conducted in Matlab and Simulink environment, the available energy is initially allocated for all the apartments and has them use it for free. The modeled system is applied to a three-apartment complex and the simulation results are obtained based on the electricity pricing tariff in Turkey. The amounts reflected in the electricity bill in the cases where the solar energy used and not used are calculated separately and compared later in the experimental results. It is demonstrated that the shared energy of the apartment complex can be allocated in an efficient and fair way. Moreover, it is proved that the budget generated by using the cheap energy can pay off the fix costs such as battery charge and renewal costs. © 2015 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

    An economic analysis of the applicability of solar power on multi-apartment buildings in Turkey

    Electricity consumption reaches its peak between 19:00 and 22:00 worldwide and this consumption occurs largely in the residential areas. The isolated houses have advantages in terms of applicability of solar panels while the same opportunity does not exist for apartment complexes. Having many flats and not enough space for the installation of solar panels, tenants of such complexes are not able to act independently. However, usage of solar energy has vital importance for energy productivity, consumption control, and supporting the production especially for countries like Turkey where the majority of the population lives in apartment complexes. For instance, while the energy consumption in a complex with 50 flats means 50 times more than the consumption of isolated houses,the ability of the same complexes to produce its own energy means a great gain. The main barriers of the solar panel usage in the apartment complexes are the requirement of the common usage of panels which requires the flat owners act together, and unbalance between the number of flats and roof space. These problems mentioned require not only solution for the technical hardware but also economic solution as well. This study at hand presents a solution to the issue from the economic perspective. It is aimed to minimize the necessity of flat owners acting together by developing a scenario of not reflecting the set up cost to the owners. On the other hand, the set up and its cost are left for the private companies to handle. It is estimated that the set up cost along with a profit equal to the average interest rates to be paid by the flat owners to the companies setting up the system in 20 years which is the average lifetime of the panels. The resulting scenario shows that the amount of monthly payments of the owners to the company throughout the 20 years are nearly 30 % lower that their monthly electricity and gas payments. It is also presented how the State support discussed in the research pays back in various ways along with the economic activity estimated in the solar panel market. An apartment complex with 20 flats in 5 floors is chosen for the illustration purposes in the final section.

    Barriers in front of solar energy plants in Turkey and investment analysis of solution scenarios-case study on a 10 MW system

    The importance of the solar energy usage as a clean source of energy in Turkey is discussed, and combined small capital usage along with State support is analyzed within various scenarios in order to make the sector attractive for investors in every level. Recently, formulated legislations have set up the stage for the solar energy stations in Turkey. Although the price per kWh for which the State guarantees to buy the electricity for is at an acceptable level for small capital owners, high initial investment requirement constitutes a disadvantage because investments at the level of mega watts require millions of dollars. Solar energy investments are not necessarily attractive for local and foreign investors with large capitals. The main reason is the return of investment period being between 8 and 14 yrs. Life of the overall system depending on the structure of the solar panels being 20-24 yrs and even an average of 10 yrs for inverter is an another drawback. The resulting picture shows that the utilization of solar energy in Turkey might end up being less than expected. Various scenarios are produced and analysis is conducted to solve the aforementioned problems. At the first level of the produced solution, turning the small capitals with lower profit mindsets into larger capitals; at the second level, scenarios of State supports and their analysis for investors at any level; and at the third level, the effect of doubling the life of the established system by renewing itself on the scenarios is studied. While developing the scenarios, the profit rate determined for the investors is kept constant while changing the remaining parameters. The issues of how the State supports obtained for the solution be repaid in the long run and other gains for the State are also discussed. In order for the results of the research to be usable, the technical infrastructure of a 10 MW solar energy system and cost analysis are added into this research. The costs of the solar parks selected worldwide are considered in the cost analysis in generalizing the findings. Although the research discusses the setting up solar energy systems and management in Turkey, it is known that similar problems exist in many other places worldwide. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

    Determining the Hardware Features and Automation Criteria of a System Enabling the Usage of Solar Panels in Apartment Complexes

    In this study, hardware features and automation criteria of solar energy panels are determined which enables them to be used in apartment complexes together and efficiently by the tenants. These criteria are used in generating the algorithm of the automation. Both the relationship of the system with the central network and the energy system in the complex are considered when determining the automation criteria. Additionally, common budget management of the complex is included in the automation. As a result of the lack of space on the roofs of the complexes, tenants not being able to act individually and place panels on the roofs, thus not being able to take advantage of solar energy, is the problem leading to this research at hand. The study shows that not only the people living in isolated houses but also the tenants of the apartment complexes can benefit from solar energy, use a clean type of energy supporting the protection of the environment and pay less for a quality energy. The developed system is designed as a microgrid compatible with smart grids structure and the gains to be realized as a result of the relief on the energy transmission and distribution lines with the dissemination of the solar panels on the apartment complexes is also pointed out in the study. The study is conducted considering the apartment complex structure widely used in Turkey.

    FPGA Based Digital Electronic Education, Data Entry Organization for a Calculator

    In this study, an example is presented developed under a Project named FPGA based Digital Electronics Education Project (FPGA_b_DEEP). The Project aims to develop instructive and attractive examples to teach Digital Electronics effectively and faster. In the example developed in this study, a data entry organization part of an 8 bits calculator design is dealt with. The design is prepared by considering students/new designers' knowledge level and divided into four parts for better understanding. The functions implemented in the modules are to code a number or an arithmetic operation to each button, to shift the numbers to left side with each entered digit of number, to multiply the digits with proper coefficients from decimal numbering system, to parallel add the multiplied digits with the proper coefficients, to create the number from entered digits at electronics environment (in a 32 bits register)

    Improving Digital Electronics Education with FPGA technology, PBL and Micro Learning methods

    In this study, an ongoing Project named FPGA Based Digital Electronics Education (FPGA-b-DEEP) is introduced and the advantages of FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Arrays) technology which brought to digital design area are dealt with by using a case study. The Project aims to develop instructive and attractive examples to teach Digital Electronics efficiently and faster. In addition to this, PBL(Project Based Learning) method and Micro Learning method are dealt with at the study saperately.     Utilization of energy storage systems charged from grid in buildings and comparison with solar systems

    This study is motivated by the fact that a big portion of energy consumption between the hours of 17:00 and 22:00 when the global energy consumption reaches very high levels occurs at residential areas. The aim here is to discuss the applicability of energy storage systems in the multi-apartment complexes with energy management systems by providing experimental results. The results also include an economic comparison between solar systems and energy storage systems. Savings reflected on the monthly bills both from the solar energy and stored energy consumption based on various scenarios and the time for return of investment resulting from these savings are also provided. The findings point out that the energy storage systems can produce substantial amounts of savings both for the end users and the country overall by letting the apartments store the energy when it is cheaper during the day and use the stored energy when it is expensive. © 2014 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
