The case of police officers in Türkiye(2024) KARTAL, Mert; KARAKAŞ, NEŞE; Kapikiran, GurkanAim: To assess police officers’ health beliefs about testicular cancer and their level of knowledge about testicular self-examination (TSE). Materials and Methods: The data for the study were collected from 120 volunteer police officers using a questionnaire asking for their introductory information and the Champion’s Health Belief Model Scale on Testicular Cancer and Screening. Results: 84.2% of the participants were married, 14.2% had a family history of cancer, 36.7% had never heard of testicular cancer, 81.7% had never heard of TSE and 87.5% had never performed TSE. The rate of those who do not know how to perform TSE is 80.8%. While 40.8% of police officers said that a palpable mass in the testicle was a sign of testicular cancer, 51.7% said that pain in the testicle, 29.1% swelling in the testicle, 47.5% pain or tenderness in the groin, 23.3% redness in the testicle and 20% weight loss would be signs of testicular cancer. Smokers had higher perceptions of the seriousness, benefits and barriers of TSE (p=0.048, p=0.002, p=0.031, respectively). Those with a family history of cancer and those with testicular problems had higher perceptions of sensitivity (p=0.010, p=0.003, respectively). Conclusion: It was found that there was a lack of knowledge about testicular cancer and TSE among police officers. It is recommended that health training is planned to provide information and to put the acquired knowledge into practice, and that qualitative public health studies are carried out on larger samples to identify the factors that prevent the implementation of TSE.Öğe Relation between Health Quality Perceptions and Patient Safety Cultures of Nurses Working in Surgical Clinics(2023) Kapikiran, Gurkan; Çetin, Yasin; YAYAN, Emriye HilalObjective: The study was carried out to determine the effect of health quality perceptions of nurses working in surgical clinics on patient safety culture. Materials and Methods: The research is descriptive type and correlational. The sample of the research consisted of 237 nurses. Personal Information Form created by the researchers, Patient Safety Culture Scale (PSCS), and Quality Perception Scale (QPS) were used as data collection tools in the study. Data were collected between January 2021 and February 2022. Results: The total mean score obtained from PSCS was found to be 3.36±0.21 in the study. In the study, it was found that the total mean score obtained from the QPS was 82.15±6.80. A positive, moderate correlation was found between the total score of PSCS and the total score of QPS (r= 0.407, p<0.01). Conclusions: It was determined that the increase in the quality perceptions of the nurses working in the surgical clinics increased the patient safety culture. It was observed that nurses who care for surgical patients attach importance to patient safety culture, especially in terms of patient benefit. It is recommended to organize in-service training programs to increase both quality perceptions and patient safety culture of healthcare professionals.Öğe The effect of Covid-19 phobia on work stress and psychological resilience of nurses exposed to surgical smoke in the operating room(2022) Kapikiran, Gurkan; CİCİ, Remziye; Topdemir, Esra AnuşThe purpose of the study is to determine the effect of Covid-19 Phobia on the work stress and psychological resilience of nurses exposed to surgical smoke in the operating room emergency surgical interventions. This study was designed as descriptive and correlational research, and it was conducted with 160 nurses working in the operating room units of three different hospitals in Türkiye between the dates of August 2020 and May 2021. The work stress scale, brief resilience scale, and Covid-19 phobia scale (C19P-S) were used for data collection. It was determined that the mean work stress score of the nurses was high with a score of 40.11±4.91, the mean score for psycho- logical resilience was moderate with a score of 15.00±3.95, and the mean score for C19P-S was high with a score of 71.58±15.45. There was a significant negative strong (r: -.706) correlation found between Covid-19 phobia and psychological resilience. It was found that there was a positive moderate significant correlation (r: .589) between Covid-19 phobia and work stress (p<0.05). Covid-19 phobia was determined high for nurses exposed to surgical smoke, Covid-19 phobia increased work stress for nurses and negatively affected their psychological resilience level.Öğe The Effect of Nomophobic Behaviors on Caring Behaviors in Nurses Working in Intensive Care Clinics(2023) Çetin, Yasin; AĞRALI, CANSU; ÜNAL, ESRA; Kapikiran, GurkanAim: It is known that nomophobia, which occurs as a result of phone addiction, causes individuals to experience more anxiety, depression and sleep problems than usual, and their quality of life and work performance are adversely affected. In this study, it was aimed to determine the effect of nurses exhibiting nomophobic behaviors on their care behaviors. Material and Methods: This research was conducted in a descriptive and relationship-seeking type. The minimum sample volume to be reached was calculated as 270 according to the known sample formula. The study was conducted with 284 nurses working in intensive care units. The research data were collected with Google Forms in February-May 2022. Introductory information form, Nomophobia Scale Caring Behaviors Inventory-24 were used to collect data. Results: Nomophobia scores were moderate with 90.09±28.47, and caring behaviors scores were high with 124.05±18.49. A low negative correlation (r=-0.178, p<0.01) was found between the total score of the Nomophobia and the total score of caring behaviors. Conclusions: In this research, it was found that nurses’ nomophobic behaviors affected their caring behaviors negatively. To eliminate the negative effect of nomophobia on caring behaviors, we recommend that the awareness of intensive care nurses about phone dependency and the effects of this dependency be raised.Öğe The effect of nursing care satisfaction on pain and anxiety levels of patients undergoing orthopedic surgery in the early postoperative period(2022) GÜNEŞ, HÜSEYİN; Bulbuloglu, Semra; Kapikiran, Gurkan; Sarıtaş, SerdarIn our study, we aimed to examine the effect of nursing care satisfaction on the pain and anxiety levels of patients who underwent orthopedic surgery. This descriptive study was conducted with the participation of patients who underwent surgery in the orthopedic clinic of a training and research hospital, and they were in the early postoperative period. Patient information form, Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scale and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory were used in data collection. In this study, we found that 41.2% of the orthopedic patients were between the ages of 36 and 50, and 60.4% of them were women. Both nursing care satisfaction and anxiety levels were found to be higher in women than men (p<0.05). The highest satisfaction rate was found among patients aged 18-35 years old, and the highest anxiety level was found in patients over the age of 66. In our study, we found that higher anxiety levels increased pain intensity, and a high level of nursing care satisfaction could be seen in various pain and anxiety levels. Our study showed that nursing care satisfaction was affected by pain and anxiety in patients who underwent orthopedic surgery. In addition, it showed that pain and anxiety trigger each other. Clinicians should be aware of the negative effects of pain and anxiety on postoperative recovery. Strategies to increase nursing care satisfaction should be developed.Öğe The Effect of Surgical Nurses' Attitudes Towards Evidence-Based Practices on Patient Safety Culture: Descriptive and Relationship-Seeking Study(2024) Kapikiran, Gurkan; Çetin, Yasin; AĞRALI, CANSU; ÜNAL, ESRAAim: This study was aimed to evaluate the relationship and the effect of surgical nurses' attitudes to evidence-based nursing (EBN) practices on patient safety culture (PSC). Material and Method: The study was descriptive and correlational. The sample consisted of 364 nurses working in the surgical departments of a university hospital. Data were collected by using individual information form, attitude towards EBN scale and PSC scale. Results: The average total score of PSC of surgical nurses was 3.60±0.38 and the average total score of attitudes towards EBN practice was 60.07±6.01. There was a strong positive correlation between EBN practices and PSC (r=0.705, p=0.000). In the regression analysis, it was seen that the attitude towards EBN practices, which was the predictor variable, explained approximately 49.7% of the variance in the predicted variable of PSC (F=358.175; R2=0.497; p=0.000). Conclusion: It was determined that the attitudes of surgical nurses towards EBN practices and PSC were positive. It was found that surgical nurses with higher attitudes towards EBN practices had more positive attitudes towards PSC. Although PSC is important for nurses working in all clinics, it is more important for nurses working in surgical clinics. Therefore, it is recommended that working conditions should be improved and in-service trainings should be planned in line with the latest evidence findings.
