    Competitiveness and Sustainability in Local Economic Development: Strategic Transformation with the Product Space Approach

    This study examines the Product Space approach, which constitutes one of the fundamental components of sustainable local development, and explores its relationship with regional competitiveness. Sustainable development aims to ensure the well-being of current generations without jeopardizing the needs of future generations by addressing economic, social, and environmental dimensions in an integrated manner. In this context, local development strategies play a critical role in promoting regional economic growth, reducing social inequalities, and supporting the sustainable use of natural resources. The Product Space approach provides an analytical framework that analyzes a country’ s existing production structure and identifies potential product groups that could be developed in the future. This method facilitates progress toward sustainable development goals by contributing to economic diversification. In the study, data from Harvard University’ s Growth Lab, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), and the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM) are utilized to analyze Turkey’ s production and export structure, and to identify the sectors in which industrial policies should be concentrated. The findings indicate that, in order to enhance its international competitiveness, Turkey must shift toward high-tech production and align its regional development strategies accordingly.
