Öğe Effect of Apricot Farmers' Knowledge, Experience, and Anxieties About Climate Change on Their Adaptation Behavior(Springer, 2026) Aslan, Ahmet; Gungor, Damla; Gunduz, OrhanApricot cultivation in Malatya, Turkey, depends on narrow seasonal windows for water and temperature, and in recent years, growers have faced recurrent drought, late spring frost, and erratic heat. In this study, we aim to determine which features of the decision-maker best predict adaptation under those conditions: what farmers know about climate change, what they have lived through in recent seasons, and how they feel when they face uncertainty. We also examine two institutions that shape routine choices in the region: producer cooperatives and agricultural insurance. Evidence is obtained from a field survey of apricot growers analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. Anxiety about climate change showed the strongest positive association with adaptive action, followed by direct experience and knowledge. Cooperative members reported higher knowledge and learning through practice. Insurance plays a different role by providing a financial backstop that lowers perceived exposure, eases anxiety, and reduces the urge to search for additional information under stress. Modeling these cognitive, emotional, and experiential factors alongside the two institutions in a single study shows how they work together in everyday production. The results support policies that combine agronomic extension and training with stronger cooperative capacity and practical risk protection so that perennial fruit farmers can remain resilient as conditions change.Öğe Energy Use and Carbon Emissions of Dried Apricot Production in Türkiye(Springer, 2025) Aslan, Ahmet; Gunduz, Orhan; Yildirim, CagatayThis study examines the energy efficiency and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of dried apricot production in T & uuml;rkiye. Using data collected from 285 dried apricot producers during the 2019-2020 production season, energy inputs and outputs, net energy, and carbon emissions were analyzed. The findings show that the energy output is 16,103.4 MJ ha(-)1, and dried apricots account for 86.8% of the energy output with an energy value of 13,972.1 MJ ha(-)1, while the apricot kernels obtained as a by-product have an energy value of 2131.3 MJ ha(-)1 and account for 13.2%. The Energy Use Efficiency (EUE) of dried apricot production was calculated as 0.63. For dried apricot production, 1 MJ of energy consumption corresponds to 0.63 MJ of energy, indicating a relatively high energy input compared to the output. The primary energy inputs required for production are electricity (59.62%) and manpower (12.38%). In dried apricot production, non-renewable energy (NRE) (86.54%) energy inputs are significantly higher than renewable energy (RE) (13.45%). Total greenhouse gas emissions from dried apricot production were determined to be 3034.2 kg CO2-eq ha(-)1. Energy-efficient technologies must be used in dried apricot production.Öğe Navigating Global Agri-food Markets: An Entropy-Based TOPSIS Approach for Strategic Diversification of Türkiye's Dried Apricot Exports(Springer, 2025) Meral, Huseyin; Ozdemir, Yunus Emre; Gunduz, OrhanThe aim of this study was to provide an objective and data-driven framework for identifying and prioritizing alternative export markets for T & uuml;rkiye's dried apricots. A multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach, combining the entropy method and technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS), was applied to evaluate and rank potential destinations. The analysis relied on trade data from 15 leading importers, covering import value, import volume, growth rates, global import share, distance, and tariff levels. The entropy results revealed that tariff barriers, import quantity, and distance were the most influential factors, while unit value played only a minor role. Based on the entropy-weighted TOPSIS scores, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and China were identified as short-term priority markets. Poland, the Netherlands, Italy, Russia, Spain, and India were classified as medium-term opportunities. Algeria, Australia, and Brazil were assessed as long-term strategic options. These results underline the importance of export diversification strategies. Instead of relying on high-price destinations, T & uuml;rkiye should concentrate on markets with sustainable demand, favorable trade policies, and manageable logistical conditions. Policy actions are therefore essential. Priorities include negotiating tariff reductions in high-barrier markets, promoting the European Union-registered Malatya Apricot as a geographical indication, and supporting producers in adopting organic and traceable production systems. The study also highlights the methodological value of combining entropy and TOPSIS. This approach provides a robust and transparent framework for evidence-based decision-making. The findings offer policymakers a roadmap to design targeted trade agreements, enhance product differentiation, and align agricultural support programs with international market requirements. As a result, T & uuml;rkiye can strengthen its competitiveness in global agricultural trade and secure more sustainable export growth.Öğe Tarımda Dayanıklılık ve Sürdürülebilirlik: Kavramsal Çerçeve ve Yeni Yaklaşımlar(2025) Gunduz, Orhan; Ceyhan, Vedat; Kadakoğlu, CansuGünümüze kadar yapılan birçok çalışmada bu iki kavram anlam ve amaç açısından net bir ayrım yapılmaksızın kullanılmıştır. Sürdürülebilirlik ve dayanıklılık arasındaki benzerlikler ve farklılıklar konusunda var olan bilgi eksikliği hem akademik çalışmalarda hem de uygulamalı çalışmalarda sorunlara yol açmıştır. Bu çerçevede bu çalışmanın amaçları (i) sürdürülebilirlik ve dayanıklılık kavramlarının tarihsel gelişimlerinin ortaya konulması, (ii) sürdürülebilirlik ve dayanıklılığı ilişkilendiren çalışma çerçevelerinin incelenmesi, (iii) mevcut çalışma çerçevelerinin farklı uygulamalardaki avantajlarını ve dezavantajlarının ortaya konulması ve (iv) sürdürülebilirlik ve dayanıklılık konularındaki çalışmaların tarihsel gelişiminin ve gelecek araştırma eğilimlerinin belirlenmesidir. Sürdürülebilirlik ve dayanıklılık konularına odaklanan mevcut literatürün gelişimi, genel nitelikleri ve eğilimleri kritik literatür incelemesi, bibliyometrik analiz, tematik analiz ve meta analiz yöntemleri yardımıyla ortaya konulmuştur. Araştırma bulguları, sürdürülebilirlik kavramının daha çok korumaya ve çıktıya, dayanıklılık kavramının ise uyum/iyileştirme ve sürece odaklandığını göstermiştir. Araştırma bulguları ayrıca günümüze kadar yapılan çalışmalarda sürdürülebilirlik ve dayanıklılık kavramları arasındaki rekabet ve tamamlayıcılık ilişkilerinin yeterli düzeyde ele alınamadığını ve bu yüzden akademik çalışmalarda ve uygulamada büyük sorunlarla karşılaşıldığını göstermiştir. Türkiye’de gerçekleştirilen akademik çalışmalarda sağlamlık kapasitesi kastedilerek sağlamlık ile dayanıklılık kavramlarının aynı anlamda kullanıldığı belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca, yakın gelecekte dayanıklılık ve sürdürülebilirlik bağlamında çalışmaların iklim (dayanıklılık, kırılganlık, iklim değişikliği, sürdürülebilirlik, adaptasyon, güvenlik açığı, yönetişim, iklim değişikliği adaptasyonu ve dönüşüm) ve sosyal-ekolojik sistemler (ekosistem hizmetleri, yönetişim ve dayanıklı şehirler) odağında ilerleyeceği tespit edilmiştir. Dayanıklılık ve sürdürülebilirlik arasındaki rekabet ve tamamlayıcılık ilişkilerinin dikkate alınması ve uygun çalışma çerçevesinin seçilmesi yapılacak akademik ve uygulamalı çalışmaların etkinliğini artırabilecektir.Öğe The link among energy consumption, growth and globalization in Turkish agriculture(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2023) Gunduz, Orhan; Korkmaz, Ozge; Ceyhan, VedatPurpose This study aims to empirically examine the relationship between energy consumption, agricultural economic growth and globalization in Turkey by using data from 1980 to 2018. Design/methodology/approach The Lee-Strazicich LM breakpoint test was used to test the stationarity of the variables. The presence of the long-run relationship between the variables was examined by using the Maki cointegration test. The dynamic ordinary least squares method was used to estimate the long-run coefficients of the model. The direction of causalities was determined using the Toda-Yamamoto causality test. Findings Research results showed that consuming energy on average of 14,460 GJ/hectare has returned $1,612 agricultural gross domestic products (GDP)/hectare per year. Turkey's energy consumption (EC), GDP and globalization index (GI) from 1980 to 2018 increased by 2-fold, 3-fold and 1.5-fold, respectively. Research results also showed that Turkey's EC was affected by GI and GDP. Practical implications The study suggests using environmentally friendly energy inputs and conscious consumption to reach growth targets and to reduce the pressure of intensive energy use on natural resources. Further research is needed for exploring the causality and relationship between EC and GI and along with other variables in the agricultural sector. Originality/value The study contributes two contributions to the existing literature. The first contribution is to examine the neglected relationship between GI and EC and GDP in Turkey. The second is that the EC data for Turkish agriculture used in the study were calculated by the authors.Öğe Unveiling the Potential of EU PDO Registered Malatya Apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.): Compositional, Functional, Nutritional, and Economic Aspects(Amer Chemical Soc, 2025) Dikilitas Sackesen, Sule Nur; Karakaya, Sibel; Durmaz, Gokhan; Gunduz, Orhan; Sahingil, Didem; Hayaloglu, Ali AdnanApricots (Prunus armeniaca L.) are mainly grown in Asia, the Far East, South and North Africa, Europe, and Central America. Due to their commercial importance, nutritional value, and medicinal properties, they are also known as the golden fruit and are enjoying increasing economic popularity. The apricot fruit and its kernel are rich in carbohydrate and other constituents, e.g., mono- and polysaccharides, carotenoids, fatty acids, cyanogenic glycosides, polyphenols and sterol derivatives, volatile compounds, and some minerals. The main sugars in apricot varieties are generally sucrose, glucose, and fructose. The sorbitol content of Malatya apricots (average value of 20 mg/100 g) is significantly higher than those of other apricot varieties. This is considered a unique feature of Malatya apricots. Apricot kernels, which contain over 40% protein, stand out as a potential solution for the sustainable use of agricultural byproducts. This Review provides a comprehensive overview of the cultivation, composition, nutritional value, and economic aspects of the apricot and its kernel. In this context, after the presentation of the gross composition and the microconstituents, the phytochemicals, the functional and bioactive properties, the therapeutic effects, the importance in world trade, and the value-added products obtained from apricots are discussed in detail with reference to recent studies. In addition, their worldwide production statistics and economic importance are also reviewed. In conclusion, the Review gives a new perspective on agricultural production, product processing, and the possibilities of new and value-added products from apricot fruit and kernels by considering the health benefits of the products, consumer demand, and production strategies.
