Öğe Assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on hazelnut production(Elsevier, 2023) Aydogan, MehmetThis study examines the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on hazelnut cultivation. Data were obtained from 196 hazelnut farmers in Turkey. Farmers' socioeconomic characteristics and satisfaction with COVID-19 precautions are compared by geographical region. Exploratory factor analysis is used to examine the impact of COVID-19, with comparisons made before and during the pandemic via a paired-sample t-test. The results indicate that, despite having similar socioeconomics and farm assets, farmers in Ordu and Sakarya were differently affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Fertilization costs increased by 60.5%, pesticide costs by 64.4%, and labor wages by 19.1% during the COVID-19 pandemic, whereas hazelnut sales prices only increased by 5.2%. Overall, the impact of COVID-19 can be explained across 4 dimensions: timing issues, increase in input prices, inability to access financial resources and logistics issues. To generalize the results, it may be appropriate to select similar farmers in different regions and compare monetary values in real terms. In particular, farmers' increased interest in digital resources due to the pandemic should be considered an opportunity for digital transformation in agricultural extension.Öğe Internal Factors Affecting Competitiveness in Agribusinesses: A Case Study in the Hazelnut Sector in Ordu and Giresun Provinces of Turkey(Springer, 2023) Aydogan, MehmetThe study's primary purpose is to reveal the factors affecting the competitiveness of hazelnut agribusiness enterprises. The data used in the research were obtained from surveys with 51 enterprises in Ordu and Giresun provinces, Turkey. The enterprises were divided into competitive and non-competitive with a two-step cluster analysis. Indices were calculated to measure enterprises' competitiveness, and the t-test was used to compare enterprises' characteristics and competitiveness values. The research results indicated that the size of the enterprises, implementation of corporate governance processes, support for personnel development, employment of qualified personnel, differentiated process management, robust information technologies infrastructure, and using e-commerce applications increased the competitiveness. The research results confirmed that the competitiveness of enterprises was affected not only by financial indicators but also by internal factors within the enterprise. The non-competitive enterprises focused on low-cost production and overlooked other internal and external factors necessary for competitiveness. The hazelnut enterprises could increase their competitiveness by investing in e-commerce and information technologies infrastructure by prioritizing personnel and corporate management processes.Öğe The Impact of Farmers' Social Networks on the Technical Inefficiencies in Hazelnut Production(Springer, 2025) Aydogan, Mehmet; Meral, HuseyinThe primary objective of the study was to ascertain the levels of technical efficiency of hazelnut farms, and the variables affecting technical efficiency and inefficiency in hazelnut production. The data employed in the research were obtained from questionnaires with 132 hazelnut farmers in Ordu province, T & uuml;rkiye. The Cobb-Douglas production function was utilised to ascertain the production function of hazelnut farms. Social network analysis was employed to examine the social networks of hazelnut farmers, and stochastic frontier analysis was used to analyse the factors affecting efficiency and inefficiency. The research results indicated that hazelnut farms in T & uuml;rkiye are not operating at maximum efficiency, suggesting a potential for enhancing average hazelnut production by 23.5% without requiring additional inputs. The analysis further revealed that the technical inefficiency levels of hazelnut farms are influenced by the educational attainment, agricultural income and social capital of the farmer. In order to reduce the inefficiency of hazelnut farms, support should be provided to farmers over a certain age and with insufficient formal education using non-formal education techniques and providing continuous education opportunities. Finally, it is recommended that significant informal actors within farmer social networks be supported with technical information on hazelnuts, as this approach has the potential to accelerate the reduction of inefficiency on hazelnut farms.
